The Pilates reformer is one of the traditional pieces of the Pilates equipment. It looks like a bed with springs, a moving platform and it has ropes and pulleys.

The exercises taught on the reformer aim to assist the body in larger range of motion which is ideal for building and toning muscles as well as increasing muscle flexibility but also stability through the joints.

Working with the Reformer is also great for rehabilitation as it takes away the element of gravity and therefor loading and weight bearing of the legs.

So for example if someone has had leg surgery or an injury, working in the horizontal plane without carrying their own body weight but using a lighter resistance can speed up recovery through controlled movement.
